El Garroferet – Fire

Over the years there have been many fires in the area some very bad

In May 2014 the day before we were to leave on holiday to Croatia this happened all around our house

The police told us to leave and we went into Jesus Pobre and then returned to watch as the the helicopters managed at last to keep all the houses safe. They, the police, the firefighters and the civil guard were amazing. They allowed us back late in the day and as we left early in the morning to go to the airport firefighters were still on Montgo in case there was an outbreak.

It even hit the country papers and here is the photo in El Pais which shows the fire behind Peter and Gloria’s house up the road from us.

I took some photos when I  returned which gives some indication of the damage to the countryside, especially the pine trees. It started about 500 metres from our house and the wind brought it towards us – the helicopters kept it clear of us – just – less than 100 metres and they then kept it above the other houses and it went up the Montgo – right to the top. I expected when I went up there later my Mum and Dad’s final resting place would be destroyed. The fire had been stopped less than 5 metres from where their ashes lay. I continue to believe it was my Mum’s will power that kept it from reaching them.

In September the same year a huge fire on Montgo again – this time overlooking Javea Port. Here are photos and a picture in a newspaper showing the before and after situation. By 2019, five years later, you could not notice where the fire had been when standing in the Port
